Nancy was born to a well-to-do Kentucky family so was able to get a good education to become a school teacher. She especially enjoyed the literary arts.

She was married three times and widowed twice. Her first husband was enumerated as J. W. M. Smith on the 1860 census for Butlersville, Allen County, Kentucky. They had three children, including two sons listed on the 1870 Ballad County, Kentucky Census under the surname of their late step-father, James Freeman Senter. They also had a daughter, Ella, born about 1860 who was no longer with Nancy by 1870 so may have died young. Mr. Senter, Nancy's second husband, had died during the Civil War, and her third husband was Judge William Bramlette. Judge Branlette outlived her by a few years. According to the obituary of her son, Rev. E. A. Smith, Nancy's first husband died in 1861 and her second in 1869, both presumably in Kentucky. The exact dates and places of death for Nancy's first two husbands are unknown as are their places of burial.

Nancy was originally buried in Paris, Texas and later reinterred in Oakland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas in the Senter family plot owned by her son, E.G. Senter.
