Born in Belfast, Antrim County, Ireland, Joseph grew up near the Belfast seaport. He traveled the Atlantic Ocean for the White Star line on various ships as a cooper. He immigrated on the "SS Haverford" , March 6, 1907, to Philadelphia, PA although he continued his association with White Star and transatlantic employment. He is found in both US and Irish census for similar years as he stayed with family in both Belfast and Jersey City when working. He saw the building progress of the "Titanic", and it was his good fortune not to be aboard on its maiden voyage!
He married Mary Margaret O'Kane and worked as a cooper for the NJ oil companies. Permanately established in Hudson County, NJ, his children were raised in Kearny. Unfortunately, due to environmental occupational hazards, Joe later became disabled with "black lung" disease, and eventually died in 1951 from Tuberculosis in St Joseph's Hospital in Jersey City.
Both his wife and daughter, "Chickie", preceded him in death.
