Born in Monroe county GA in 1827.
He moved to Claiborne parish LA in 1848 or 9 and married a Martha Ann Price. He then came to Smith county near Tyler TX where his father Silas Gammon had some land.
J.J., his father Silas and one brother Smith M. Gammon all enlisted in different TX outfits.
Silas was a private in Co D 12th TX Infantry but was soon discharged when it became apperent that he was too old to perform his duties (age close to 70 at the time).
JJ was a private in Co C 14th TX Infantry.
