From his obituary published 25 Mar 1915 in the Morning Union:
John Ferguson, who remained long at old diggings, passes away.
John Ferguson of Sebastopol, one of the oldest and best known residents of the San Juan Ridge, died at this home on Tuesday after being ill for about a week. John was one of the pioneer miners of the Ridge and when he settled at Sebastopol, a mile below North San Juan, that little community was a thriving place, but that was in the hey-day of hydraulic mining.
In the death of John Ferguson, the Ridge has lost a valued citizen, a man who was as true as steel and whose word was as good as his bond. He was of the sturdy type of pioneers, the kind of men who never knew what it was to have a faint heart. He remained at Sebastopol after many others left mainly because he loved the old place, and he contented himself with mining for himself in the old diggings.
Aside from James O Sweetland, who is still there, John Ferguson was the last of the famous Sebastopol pioneers. John was a native of Scotland, but came to America when a young man. For over half a century he had resided on the Ridge. At the time of his death he was aged about 85 years.
