From the book "Northwestern New Jersey" by Honeyman (Vol 5, pg 176): "During the early years of his career, John D. Trout engaged in the vocation of farming. He later became interested in mercantile pursuits, and has for many years been a prominent factor in poitical affairs of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The parents of John D. Trout were the late Jeremiah H. Trout, native of Delaware Township, engaged as a farmer and an active Democrat in his day; and Sarah Dougherty Trout, also deceased. John D. Trout, son of Jeremiah H. and Sarah Dougherty Trout, was born in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, near the community of Locktown on July 17, 1864. After following the life of a farmer for many years Mr. Trout, having discovered within himself talents of value in the business world, becaame identified with the general merchandise business and in 1984, purchased from John H. Vail the store located in Quakertown, New Jersey. It was not long before Mr. Trout, himself an ardent Democrat, as was his father, became interested in the political issues of the community. In 1903 he was elected to the office of tax collector for the village of Quakertown, and continued to serve most efficiently in that capacity until 1910. On June 7, 1915, the Postmaster General at the National Capital appointed Mr. Trout to the office of postmaster which he continues to conduct in connection with his general mercantile business. He is a member of the official organization of postmasters, known as the Postmasters League. On November 22, 1888, in the vicinity of Quakertown, John D. Trout was married to Laura Vail, born in that vicinity, daughter of Abram R. Vail (born in Somerset Co.) and Jane D. Vail (also a native of Somerset Co.). The Vail family being a pioneer of this vicinity".
