On May 22, 1837, William ("Bill") Anderson Smith was born to Martin Anderson and Delilah (Worthington) Smith in Bledso County, Tennesee. On July 6, "Bill" elisted at Knoxville, TN in Branner's 4th Cavalry Battalion. He served as the 1st Orderly Sergeant in Company A. When the 4th Cavalry was consolidated with the McClellan's 5th Cavalry Battalion, the result was known as H.M. Ashby's 2nd Tennesee Cavalry Regiment. According to official records, Bill served as a Private in Company F (and perhaps for a brief time in Company C) in Ashby's unit as their "orderly sergeant." Bill is present on all the existing muster roll's of Ashby's regiment prior to August 1863 with the exception of being "absent on sick furlough Pikeville" as of July 1862 and "absent sick" in February 1863. While participating in Scott's eastern Kentucky raid, Bill was captured in Richmond, Kentucky on August 3, 1863 and was received at the military prison in Louisville, Kentucky on August 5, 1863. Brown Wadsworth Smith, one of Bill's sons, tell the following story as to how Bill became a prisoner of war: "Bill and another man were riding and encountered Union troops. Bill's companion was shot to death instantly (shot his head off) and Bill was given the choice of suffering the same fate or being taken prisioner." Bill spent virtually the remainder of the war as a POW in two Union prison camps. He was received at Camp Chase, Ohio on August 10, 1863 and
remained there until he was moved to Fort Delaware, Delaware on February 29, 1864. He was paroled and sent to City Point, Virginia for exchange on February 27, 1865.
On November 20, 1866, Bill married Narcissus Emmaline Swafford (b. February 8, 1848) in Giles County, Tennessee. He and N.E. had eleven children, eight of whom lived to adulthood. Bill died on December 27, 1918.
