Coy Laban McManus, 87, of Midland, passed away Friday, September 14, 2012, surrounded by his family, at Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews.
Mr. McManus was born September 4, 1925 on the family farm in Mecklenburg County. He was the tenth of 16 children born to the late Willis Alfred McManus and Carrie Biggers McManus.
He was a graduate of Bain School in Mint Hill, class of 1943. He raised cattle and was a retired painting contractor and a man who loved his farm. Most of all, he was a husband, father, brother, and friend. He loved spending time with his family, brothers, sisters and their children. The values he instilled in his children will be his legacy.
His life journey began when in 1943 he went to volunteer for the Air Force. He was advised he was deferred back to the farm to assist his mother and younger members of the family. He lived on this farm his entire life time.
He was a charter member of United Love Baptist Church of Midland where he served in many capacities. He was a former Sunday School teacher and deacon as well as holding various offices. He was actively involved in the organization of United Love working with the Cabarrus Baptist Association Director. During a three day bond campaign he sold the most church bonds and won a bible as recognition. Coy spent many hours contacting people in regard to property and the legal aspects for a church site. He served as chairman of the building committee. Throughout his life, his faith and love in the Lord remained strong. He was very supportive of the church and had a deep love of God.
He had many accomplishments, but one that gave pleasure to so many was his avid gardening. His love of God's handiwork and the joy he received in cultivating and sharing the beauty of this handiwork with others was such a source of pride to him.
He had a passion for living. He was known and loved for his sense of humor and sharing memories and history of the past. He was compassionate, loved, and made friends with everyone he met. Coy loved the mountains of Western North Carolina, the relaxing peaceful Blue Ridge scenery.
The family will receive friends from 10 – 11 a.m., Monday, September 17, at United Love Baptist Church of Midland. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 in the sanctuary officiated by Rev. Marvin Tyson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Margaret Elizabeth Cook McManus, of the home; his daughter, Sharon Cox and her husband, Ron, of Monroe; his son, David McManus and his wife, Marsha, of Banner Elk; four step-grandchildren, Katie Walker and her husband, Drew, Susannah Maddox and her husband, Richard, and Anna and Jamie Canterbury; his brothers, Paul and his wife, Sara Margaret, Leroy and his wife, Karen, Doyle, and his sister, Libby Stegall and her husband, Ben, all of Midland; and nieces and nephews.
