In 1850 Stewart and a group of men headed to the West Coast to go mining. He mined for a while and in 1858 brought his entire family to Sacramento. He conducted mining for a time and then went into the sewing machine business, eventulaly starting his business in San Francisco. In 1871 he moved to Southern California and on his land he had a vineyard that he converted into a nursery that he ran for ten years. He was married to Melissa Fisher of New York, and together they had two children.
