Obituary

Mrs. Susie Duke, wife of Harry B. Duke, Esq., of Kansas City, died at the residence of her father. Mr. Jno. W. Waddell, July 23rd.

The sudden and unexpected termination of life for this young and lovable woman, spreads a shade of sadness all over Lexington. But a few brief moons have gone, since she, a blue eyes, fair haired embodiment of love; a bride, radiant with beauty, joyous in contemplation of immeasurable bliss, perfumed with flowers furnished by affection and admiring friends; enthroned upon a chose heart, sallied away from her family homestead and parental guidance to seal the happiness of another.

Yesterday her graceful form, consecrated by holiest prayer, embalmed by sighs of a stricken family, accompanied by the pronounced sorrow of an entire community, went to the embrace of earth to take its last sleep.

"There is no death!" The stars go down
To rise upon some fairer shore,
And bright in Heaven's jewel'd crown
They shine for evermore."

In the confines of its casket, we are informed by the last beholders, the remains of his fair woman, seemingly unswept by the effacing fingers of time, "pure as a pearl in its shell," wore a beautiful expression, emblematic of the paradise whither the spirit has gone.

THE TOMB

Died--At the residence of her parents in this city, Wednesday evening, July 23d, 1884, at 9:30 o'clock, Mrs. Harry B. Duke, nee Susie Waddell.

The Kansas City Times on the 25th, contains the following reference to the death of Mrs. Duke:--"The greatest sorrow was expressed in this city yesterday over the untimely death of Mrs. H. B. Duke, an announcement of whose decease at her old home at Lexington was made in the city papers yesterday morning. Mrs. Duke has been ill for some time but was thought to be improving and at tea time Wednesday evening she seemed much better than for several days, and a telegram to that effect was sent to this city during the evening. Before 8 o'clock, however, an attack of apoplexy came upon her and she rapidly sank until she expired about half past 9 o'clock. Mrs. E.B. Wingate, a sister, of this city, and other relatives were at the family home during her last hours, and her husband arrived at her bedside from this city a short time before her demise. The funeral will take place at Lexington this morning. The following relatives and friends from this city will go to Lexington to be present at the sad occasion. Mrs. J.W. Reid and John H. Reid, Mr. and Mrs. Edward George and Mr. E.B. Wingate.

Mrs. Duke was a lady of an unusually sweet disposition, who was well-known, and universally loved. She was married about three years ago, and leaves a husband and one child. Her death cast a gloom over our entire city. We feel our inability to say anything to lessen the grief of the stricken family. Death is to the Christian dead what life is to the living. While we mourn for her, she is rejoicing in a far better life. We gladly give space to the following article from one of her schoolmates and intimate friends:

"Once more the grim reaper, Death, has entered a happy household, and carried thence, the fairest flower. Sweet Susie Waddell Duke has been called away from us to receive her crown for faithfulness.

After weeks of illness, she suddenly drifted out into the unknown, with a smile of her pallid lips, as if to cheer the loved ones left behind; her hands crossed on her peaceful bosom, her mission ended, at rest from the cares of life, leaving us the memory of her lovely, christian character to console us.

The news of her sudden death soon spread throughout the city, causing universal sorrow, that one so lovely, so amiable, so full of sunshine, and many christian graces, should be taken from us.

And now, memory goes back, and we seem to see again the gentle girl, who won the hearts of teachers and schoolmates; the loving obedient daughter and sister; the happy, joyous wife, and still happier mother, and our hearts bleed from their sore bereavement, and it requires all our christian faith to discover "the silver lining to this dark cloud."

Yesterday morning, followed by an immense concourse of relatives and friends, we laid dear Susie, gently to rest, covered with the flowers of love and sorrow.

"Pityingly, pityingly,
Dew of Christ's love,
Rain on our stricken hearts,
Peace from above
Bid us to do thy will.
To suffer and to be still,
Soften love's anguish'd thrill,
Jesus, we pray,
Clinging so wildly,
To this precious clay.

Tenderly, tenderly,
Judge us, Oh! God;
Teach us submission
To thy chastening Rod.
Through sorrow, sternly tried,
By suffering, purified,
Make us thine own.
So shall our rest be soon,
Near the white throne."
