Bernard Clyde James was born on January 31, 1898 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada to Linda Esther James and ?.

Prior to the Great War, Bernard was living at 620 South First Street, West Missoula, Montana and working as a car mechanic. He attested in a railway construction unit in the Canadian Engineers on July 23, 1918. He departed Montreal on August 31, 1918 and landed in Liverpool on September 16, 1918. Bernard spent the duration of his time overseas in Seaford, England with the Canadian Engineers Reserve Battalion.

He was discharged on February 17, 1919 in Calgary, Alberta and returned to his mother's home located at 1137 Sherwood Street, Missoula, Montana.

While living in Portland Maine, Bernard became a naturalized citizen of the United States at the age of 24 on April 15, 1922.

Bernard and his wife, Winnifred L. James (April 13, 1905 - ?), had four children: Donald Clyde James (June 6, 1923 - Jun. 19, 2001); Douglas O. James (? - ?); and two other children.
