Marcus Hanes arrived with his parents and siblings on September 9, 1738, arriving on the ship Glasgow. Marcus turned 19 on the 17th of September. The ship's arrival lists show the name as Heintz and Marcus is shown as Marks, Johan Mark, Johan Marx or John Marcus. The Moravian Church records spell the name variously as Hohns, Hanes, Hoens, Hoehns, Haines, or Haynes. The name of Hanes was used uniformly after 1820 in most records. This family can be properly labeled as Palatines.

The Moravian Church records and the ship's records show the family left for America from Cussel (Kusel), near Zweibrucken, Germany.

Marcus married Anna Elizabeth Kerber on March 22, 1748 as recorded in the First Moravian Church records of York, PA. The family was blessed with four sons and six daughters. Two of the children died while they lived in PA. After trips to North Carolina, Marcus made the final move with his family to North Carolina in 1774. The tombstone does show Hoens, however the history of family clearly shows the name HANES was also used. It seems important to not limit a search by family and the information of how the name evolved is important for family.

The family were indeed productive citizens and were instrumental in the establishment of this new nation. The history of the Hanes family is truly an account of how their belief in a heavenly Father led them to a new country, new nation, and the realization of dreams.

"On July 15, 1797, Marcus received Holy Communion for the last time on earth and at that time was blessed for his approaching home going, the presence of the Saviour being sensibly felt." - Moravian records.

This individual is listed on the Patriot Index of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and I am a proud member of the DAR through this 4th great grandfather.

He was married to Anna Elisabeth Kerber. Her memorial is 19078018.

Rosina / 1758-1825 / married Johannes Zimmerman - memorial 19087851
