Erick was born to Lars Erikson Skjeldal Grindheim and Magdela Larsdotter on the Grindheim farm, Etne, Hordaland, Norway. He was the fourth child to be named Erick, the first three having died in infancy.
After immigrating in 1847 to Illinois and then moving with the family to Hamilton County, Iowa, Erick enlisted in Company K, 32nd Iowa Regiment at Dubuque in October 1862. He was promoted to Corporal in June 1865 and mustered out in August 1865.
Erick purchased 50 acres from his father and 80 from Lars Henryson.
Erick never married.
