Joy Shideler February 29, 1924 January 22, 2011 Joy Shideler passed away at the Hospice Care Center in Grand Junction, CO on January 22, 2011. She was 86 years old. Joy was born to Grant Austin and Mattie Skelton-Austin on February 29,1924 in Laramie, WY. She was a leap-year baby and has only had a total of 21 birthdays. Shortly after graduating high school she was married to the late Alfred Max Shideler, M.D. in Grand Junction, CO in 1942. Through this union were born three children, Ron, Ann, and Nathan. She was very involved with her family and was a natural philanthropist; always there as a mother and an ever supporting wife to Max. Helping others was Joy's way of life. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and assisted in several organizations and charities such as establishing the Alfred M. Shideler Professorship of Pathology and the Community Hospital pathology laboratory. She was also a Community Chest drive president, and contributed to the LDS Deseret Trust Company. Aside from helping others, Joy took pleasure in canning fruits and jams to which she would give away every year until her death. One of her apricot jams was awarded with the Judges Choice Ribbon in the Grand Junction Fair. Joy also had a great talent for quilting and was an excellent seamstress. She was actively aware of political and investment trends as well. She was loved by so many, and will be deeply missed. Joy is survived by her children, Ron Shideler of Grand Junction, CO; Ann Shideler of Phoenix, AZ, and Nathan (Pat) Shideler of Des Moines, IA; her brother, Jim Austin of Las Vegas, NV, and sister, Ruby Gale of Vernal, UT; grandchildren, Alex and Beverly Shideler of Springfield, VA; David Shideler of Sierra Vista, AZ; Joseph and Christina Shideler of Austin, TX; Robert and Emily-Rose Howie of Charleston, SC, and David and Kamenthri Welsh of England. Joy is also survived by seven great grandchildren, Terra, Hanna, Cadence, Joy, AJ, Kiran Ann, and Ajay. A visitation will be held Friday, January 28, 2011 from 5 - 7:00 p.m. at Martin Mortuary. The funeral service will be the following day, Saturday January 29, 2011 at the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS, 2235 Kingston Road Grand Junction, CO 81507 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will immediately follow at the Orchard Mesa Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made in Joy's name to the LDS Humanitarian Services; http://lds.org/humanitarianservices, or to the Salvation Army. Arrangements have been entrusted to Martin Mortuary.
