Annie JAMES had a very adventurous life. She was born in Garlick Hill, in the heart of the City of London, and grew up there with her parents and 4 brothers (one of whom died young). Her father died when she was about 6, and the following year, she was granted a place at the very prestigious Christ's Hospital School in Hertford. This school, known as the 'Blue Coat' School, was a charitable foundation, accepting especially children of families in social, financial or other need. However, it also had an excellent reputation. Annie's place was paid for because her father had been associated with one of the ancient Guilds of the City of London.
Annie left the school in 1853, and the following year, she, her mother and 3 brothers emigrated to Australia, where her mother married Edmund JAMES, an Englishman whom she had met in London. The family settled in the area round Melbourne.
In 1870 Annie married Edmund's nephew, also Edmund JAMES, at All Saint's Church, Northcote, Victoria. They then re-emigrated to Carson City, Nevada, where they settled. Edmund had a hairdressing and barbering business there, though he also became involved in local politics. They raised 4 children in Carson City, and were considered some of the pioneers of the state of Nevada. In later life, Edmund and Annie were at the forefront of Carson City society.
In 1902, Annie returned to Melbourne, to visit her 3 brothers (her mother and Edmund Senior having died there in 1900 and 1898 respectively). It is not clear whether she traveled alone or with her husband. In any event, Annie sadly died in Fitzroy, at the house of her oldest brother Richard. She was buried in a grave with her youngest brother George PAGE and his wife. Her mother and other brother John are in a grave very close by.
Her husband Edmund died in Carson City in 1918, and is buried with their 2 sons in Lone Mountain Cemetery. The ashes of their younger daughter, Annie Amelia (Millie), are probably interred in the neighbouring grave of their son-in-law, Henry Robert BURLINGTON.

Edmund JAMES, Annie's husband, was the older brother of my maternal Great Grandfather, John Molesworth JAMES.
