Alta Alice Miner Bates was a woman ahead of her time. She was the founder and manager of a business in 1905, years before women were legally given suffrage.

Born in Lappiere, Mich., Miss Bates was the first nurse to graduate from the Eureka Training School for Nurses in Eureka, Calif. at age 23. After moving to Berkeley in 1904, she cared for women and their newborns in her parents' home on Walnut Street.

On April 1, 1905 she opened the Alta Bates Sanitarium at 2314 Dwight Way -- an eight-bed maternity home -- and began training her first class of nursing students. Local physicians and community leaders were so impressed with Miss Bates' work and vision and supported the purchase of two blocks on Webster Street in 1908 where she opened a three-story building that is part of the present Alta Bates Campus.

Miss Bates continued to supervise the hospital, personally teach nursing students and worked as nurse-anesthetist through years of expansion and growth. In 1928. a new six-story 112-bed hospital at Regent and Webster streets was dedicated and renamed Alta Bates Hospital. Miss Bates' nursing school closed in 1934, having trained more than 330 nurses. In 1946, Alta Bates Community Hospital, a non-profit with a board of directors was formed.

Miss Bates' health forced her to retire as director of the hospital in 1949. In her final years, Miss Bates was cared for in a nursing home on Webster Street, near the hospital she founded, and cared for by some of the nurses she helped train.

This portrait, by local artist Arthur W. Palmer was presented to the Hospital in Miss Bates' honor by the medical staff in 1960.
