Husband of : Celeste Black Bartlett

Jack Ernest Bartlett, 84, of Reed St. went to be with the Lord Monday, September 10, 2012, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center.

Jack was born January 18, 1928, in Buncombe Co. to the late Rev. Ernest R. and Lilly Mae Fore Bartlett. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Polly Bartlett Silver. He was the owner of Jack Bartlett Moving and Construction Company and a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church.

Jack was an avid bear hunter and always had a story. His stories were, without fail, full of humor, adventure, and fun. And that was Jack: he was a funny, outgoing man, who loved people almost as much as a good story, well told. He was always ready with a handshake or a smile, and had never met a stranger in his life. Jack also had a way with animals. From day-to-day, it was impossible to know what kind of creature he would bring home. Once, it was a cow; other times, it was a horse or a mule. His two dogs, Molly and Brandi, were always at his side. More than all these things, Jack loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And, in knowing that, it gives comfort and assurance to his family.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Celeste Black Bartlett, and not a day passed that he did not remind her how much he loved her.

He is also survived by sons Jack Everett Bartlett and wife Cindy, James Edward Bartlett, Randy Purcell, Tim Purcell and wife Rhonda, and Phillip Purcell and wife Debbie; grandchildren Jason Bartlett and wife June, Courtney Purcell Shaughnessy and husband Patrick, Matthew Purcell, Brandon Purcell and wife Megan, Aaron Purcell and wife Holly, Celesta "C.J." Purcell Hussung and husband Dale, Nathan Purcell and wife Katherine, and Jerod Purcell; great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Jacob, and Josiah Bartlett, Eli Purcell, and Olivia and Lola Purcell; sister Lois Bartlett Rich; and brothers Lewis Bartlett, Harold Bartlett and wife Doris, Clarence "Jinx" Bartlett and wife Helen, Charles Bartlett and wife Louise, and Dewey Bartlett and wife Judy.

We will miss him.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery. Grandson Jason Bartlett will be officiating.

His family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.
