At the beginning of the war he was a member of Captain Hamilton's 81st Virginia Militia (Bath County).

20th Virginia Cavalry, Jackson's Brigade, Lomax's Division, Valley District, Dept. of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence: Bath County VA.
Enlisted for the duration of the war on 11/30/1863 in Bath County, VA., he was mustered into Company E, 46th Virginia Cavalry as a Private.
Listed on 12/31/1863 - 8/31/1864 and Sept & Oct 1864 Rolls as "Transferred to Co.() 20 Va. Cav. Horse & bounty."
No further record.

On 4/6/1902, age 66, his widow applied for a Confederate Soldier's Widow's Pension; she was approved for $25 per annum.

The 20th Virginia Cavalry Regiment was organized in August, 1863, and was composed of "North Western Virginians." The unit served in W.L. Jackson's Brigade and confronted the Federals in western Virginia and in the Shenandoah Valley. It disbanded in mid-April, 1865. The field officers were Colonel W.W. Arnett, Lieutenant Colonels Dudley Evans and John B. Lady, and Major Elihu Hutton.
