At beginning of war, he was Acting Lieutenant Colonel of "Hamilton's" Company, 81st Virginia Militia.

Residence Bath County VA; 5'10", dark complexion, gray eyes, black hair.
Enlisted in 1861, he was mustered into Bath Virginia Cavalry Company as a Private.
On 4/9/1862 at Shenandoah Mountain, VA., he was mustered into Company K, 52nd Virginia Infantry as a Private.
Promoted to Ordnance Sergeant, Field & Staff, on 5/1/1862.
Present or accounted for on all Rolls until discharged September 1864 as he had been elected Sheriff of Bath County.

Postwar Sheriff 1864-69; farmer, and Clerk of Bath County Circuit Court, 1887-99.

Mr. A.G. Cleek, for many years the Clerk of our courts, wedded Tuesday last, Mrs. Maggie F. Cleek, of Pocahontas County, W. Va. Richmond Dispatch, December 16, 1900.

- County Clerk of Bath Dead. -
Mr. A.G. Cleek, for many years Clerk of the County Court of Bath County, died on Friday evening at his home at Warm Springs, aged 75 years.
Deceased had been married twice. His second marriage taking place in this city only a few months ago.
He was a brave Confederate soldier and was held in high esteem by his constituents.
The funeral took place Monday with Masonic honors. Staunton Spectator and Vindicator, February 22, 1901.

A.G. Cleek, Clerk of the Court of Bath County and a former Sheriff, died at Warm Springs on Saturday.
His second marriage took place in Staunton several months ago to Miss Cleek, of West Virginia. Augusta County Argus (Staunton, Virginia), February 19, 1901.

The 52nd Virginia Infantry Regiment was organized at Staunton, Virginia, in August, 1861. Many of its members were from Augusta County.
