BALDWIN, James: A proprietor of the Baldwin Brothers Ferry, Lawrence, KS, died Thursday, 30 April 1863 from injuries he suffered on a return trip from Leavenworth, near Little Strange Creek, after being thrown from his horse. Funeral services next Sabbath, 11:00 by Elder Veatch. [From a transcript].

The Baldwin Brothers Ferry was the first ferry to transport settlers across the Kansas River to settle Lawrence, KS. The ferry was owned and built by Baldwin's older brother, John Baldwin.
