Maria Hall Redman Race was born on the 29th of Dec, 1855 at Clarence Terrace, Aycliffe, Durham, England to Wheatman Redman (1828-1864) & Elizabeth Hall (1826-1907). She was baptized in Aycliffe, Durham on the 2nd of Feb, 1856.

Maria's father was born in Haughton Le Skerne, Durham, England, marrying Elizabeth on the 14th of Nov, 1847 in Witton le Wear, Durham. Wheatman passed on the 17th of Apr 1864 at the age of 36 and is believed to be buried at St Andrews Churchyard in Great Aycliffe, Durham.

Maria's mother remarried and spent the most part of her life living north of Bishop Auckland in Witton Le Wear, Durham. To date, records provide information that Maria had eleven siblings; John, Robert, Mary Jane, William, Richard, Elizabeth Ann, Martha Ann, Wheatman, Frederick, Dinah and Thomas. Elizabeth passed on the 5th of May, 1907 at the age of 81 on Black Road, Witton Park, Durham. Her location of burial is unknown.

Maria's brother Wheatman and his wife Louisa are also buried in Homestead Cemetery, as is one of Maria's nephews, John, who is buried to the right of Maria and Joseph.
