John Daniel "Jack" Yeager, 23, was killed in action during World War II on April 22, 1944. Born May 20, 1920, in New Kensington to the late Daniel Joseph and Anna Mae Cowen Yeager, he attended Martin School, and then attended Penn State University. He worked at Bard's from 1937 until 1939, then at Alcoa from 1940 until enlisting in the Marine Corps in October 1942, where he was a proud member of the VMB423 Seahorse Marines. He was a tailgunner on the crashed B-25, where his remains and the remains of six other crew members were recently discovered on the South Pacific Island of Espirtu Santo (now known as Republiic of Vanuatu). Jack was a member of the Eagles in New Kensington when he left for the war and was known for his deep love of family, friends and country. He was also known for his tremendous sense of humor. Surviving are three nephews and one niece, Daniel C. Harkins, of Carrollton, Texas, Bernard Smith, of New Kensington, John Daniel Smith, of Lower Burrell, and Marilyn Harkins Claassen, of New Kensington; cousins, Alice Cowen Ayers, of Louisiana, Tim Cowen, of New Kensington, Priscilla Cowen Girardi, Raymond Cowen, of New Kensington, and Marsha Cowen Geyer, of Lower Burrell; and is also survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was married to the late Helen King Yeager, and besides his parents, was preceded in death by siblings, Marion Yeager Harkins and Rosalia Yeager Smith. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until services at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, in the ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington (724-335-1234), with the Rev. Kurt Skelly officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the Marines at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Lower Burrell.
