Benjamin enlisted as a Private in Company I, 5th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 24, 1861. He served at the battles of Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, Chansellorsville, Gettysburg (at the tip of Sickles triangle on Emmitsburg Road), McLeans Ford, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, and Poplar Springs Church. Benjamin suffered a gunshot wound to the left ankle at Weldon Rail Road, VA, in August 1864. Having served 3 full years, Benjamin was honorably mustered out on September 7, 1864, in Tenton, NJ.
Benjamin's two brothers also served in the Civil war, Corp. Joseph Bozarth (115th & 110th PA infantry - 1844-1907 - interred at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Pemberton, NJ), and Pvt. William Henry Bozarth (1st NJ Cav & 3rd NJ Infantry - 1837-1919 - interred at Baptist Cemetery, Pemberton, NJ).
Benjamin was a resident of Southampton Township, NJ, prior to the Civil War in a section then known as Bosuretown, and resided in Mount Holly, NJ subsequent to his service in the Civil War.
