The murder of Hung Truong is considered to be the first Hate Crime in Houston, Texas.

Hung and his father, Lam, were two of the millions who fled Vietnam by small boats in the late 1970s. They settled in the West part of Houston, Texas.

I knew Hung. He was a small teen, courteous and kind. I will always remember his hands. They were small and somewhat delicate, yet his handshakes were firm and sincere.

In the wee hours of Thursday morning, August 9, 1990, Hung and several of his friends decided to walk to a nearby convenience store for cigarettes. In those same wee hours of the night, two Skin Heads were cruising the area looking for an Asian, any Asian, to assault.

When they saw Hung walking with his friends, the Skin Heads jumped out their vehicle and chased Hung down. Hung's friends, who were white, scattered. Hung was brutally beaten with a bat. When he fell to the ground the Skin Heads began kicking and stomping him. One Skin Head viciously stomped this small teen on his head as Hung lay helpless on the cement. A witness who saw the assault from her apartment window, as she was getting dressed to go to the airport, thought what she was seeing were teens were kicking a dead dog.

As Hung was being brutally beaten, kicked and stomped, he cried out saying, "Please stop. I am sorry I ever came to your country. God forgive me."

The Skin Heads fled, and the Paramedics were called. They examined Hung and told him he would be fine, but that he would have one horrible headache when he woke up in the morning.

Hung and his friends left the scene and walked to the home of one of the teens. There they settled in and went to sleep on the floor of the friend's bedroom. A couple of hours later, Hung's friends were awakened by the sound of Hung taking his last gasps of air before he died.

The Skin Heads were caught and tried. Sadly, there is not much on the internet anymore about Hung, but from what I remember, the Skin Head who stomped Hung in the head was sentenced to 45 years in prison. The other was sentenced to 10 years.

I was present during one day of the trial, and heard evidence that blood from Hung's head was on the soul of the boot of the Skin Head who brutally stopped him in the head as Hung lay helpless on the ground.

Prior to the trial, the defense tried to convince the public that Hung was a member of a gang, but it was proved that he wasn't. I knew that he wasn't.

Vietnam would not allow Hung's mother to come to the United States for Hung's funeral. The papers said that Hung's father said that there are good and bad people in every country.

When I drive past the cemetery where Hung is buried, I feel his presence. I feel that he is at peace.

God, Bless Your Angel Hung.
