Spanish sculptor. His most important work "The World" was based on his 1930s studies of Tarascans, Mixtecs, Zapotecs, and Aztecs in Mexico. In 1937 he accepted a commission for "Cristo Rey" which is located on the mountain peak Sierra de Christo Rey, near El Paso, Texas. The forty-foot-high cruciform figure (dedicated in 1940) became his most popular work.
