Her name when she passed was Ora Ella Scaggs Couch Berninger. She was buried as Ella Couch, with her first husband's surname. Most early records use the spelling "Scaggs" for her maiden surname. [[One example of this spelling discrepancy: The Illinois marriage record for her first marriage to Walter Wade Couch shows her as Orrie Ella Scaggs (which record also identifies her parents as Thomas Scaggs & ___ Turner). The later-compiled Illinois Statewide Marriage Index shows her as Ora Ella Skaggs.]]

The children of Thomas Scaggs & Mary Turner were:
• James Lewis
• Jasper
• Ora Ella
• Dora Della
• Cora Ann
Marriage and Death Certificates show their parents for all but Dora, and marriage information from an index shows Dora's parents as Thomas Scaggs & Mary Turner as well. Fortunately, the 1860 census of Christy, Lawrence County, Illinois, shows Thomas's parents as well, Henry Scaggs & Nancy ___, and Thomas's brother, William Scaggs...all living next door to each other a few years before Ella was born.

ERROR INFO FOUND FREQUENTLY ON THE WEB: There is some evidence suggesting she is the daughter of James M. Skaggs and Elizabeth Compton. Her surname variously appears as Skaggs, Scags, Scaggs, etc. The 1870 census of Rochester Mills, Coffee Precinct, Wabash County, IL shows her living with her parents. The 1880 census shows her maternal grandmother, Sarah Compton, with her own children and the siblings of Ella as grandchildren. THIS IS A DIFFERENT ELLA.

• Walter Wade Couch & Ora Ella Scaggs Couch are my great grandparents, and their portrait is hanging on my living room wall.
• I went most of my life never realizing Ella had remarried. A cousin (I didn't know I had) sent me much information about her having been married to William Berninger, and he had only known her as Grama Berninger. A printout of various family photos he sent with the information proved this was indeed the same Ella.
