Composer. Full name Ernest John Moeran. His studies at the Royal College of Music were curtailed by the start of World War I, when he joined the Army as a motorcycle messenger. In May 1917 he was wounded in the head by shrapnel fragments that were too close to the brain to remove; a steel plate was placed in his skull and he was plagued by medical problems for the rest of his life. Sensitive to landscape and fascinated with his Irish ancestry, he made his second home in Kenmare, Ireland, after 1934. Moeran was the last important British composer of the "War Generation" to draw inspiration from English folk music, placing him in the tradition of Vaughan Williams, Butterworth, and his good friend Peter Warlock. But his major works did not appear until the late 1930's, by which time his musical language was considered outmoded. Moeran's relative obscurity is a shame because several of his compositions are lyrical masterpieces that deserve more frequent hearing, among them the Symphony in G Minor (1937), Violin Concerto (1941), Sinfonietta (1944), Cello Concerto (1945), and the Serenade in G (1948). His last years were marred by alcoholism and increasing mental instability, both consequences of his old war injury. One stormy night Moeran's body was found floating in the River Kenmare; he had been seen walking along a nearby pier only moments earlier. For years it was assumed Moeran was the victim of a drunken mishap or had even committed suicide, but an autopsy revealed the composer had suffered a massive stroke and was probably dead before he hit the water. He was buried in Kenmare, where his tombstone reads, "He Lies In The Mountain Country He Loved So Well".
