US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Channing Robert Whitaker enlisted in the Marine Corps 14 December, 1942 from Granger, Iowa. Completed recruit training at the Recruit Depot, MCB San Diego.

Assigned to A and B Companies, Infantry Battalion, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. 21 July, 1943 assigned to the 24th Replacement Battalion.

29 July, 1943 embarked SS Sommelsdick at San Diego for movement overseas. Upon arrival at Wellington, New Zealand assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at McKays Crossing.

23 October, 1943 embarked USS Feland (APA-11) at Wellington. 7-12 November, 1943 landing rehearsals at Efate, New Hebrides. 20 November, 1943 offshore reserve during D-Day operations at Tarawa.

21 November 1943 landed Green Beach Tarawa and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 22 November, 1943.

Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Luther and Mrs Reta E Whitaker, Granger, Iowa.

Remains not recovered and identified.

Commemorated in Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa.
