John I. Butterfield
Toledo, Or., April 27.--(Special)--John I. Butterfield, veteran of the Civil War, who was found dead in bed at Taft, Or., recently, bore the distinction in Lincoln County of being the first permanent homesteader to locate on the rich farming land of the Lower Siletz River [coming from Alcona County, Michigan.]
At the Battle of the Wilderness he received a bullet wound in the right lung, which was the ultimate cause of death. Although Mr. Butterfield carried three bullets and the scar of a severe wound, he never applied for or received a pension. He fought at Shiloh and at Vicksburg, was captured at the battle of Corinth and escaped from Libby prison. He was a Mason. He leaves a widow, a daughter, Mrs. May Martin, of Everett, Wash., and four sons, Fred, Leonard, Earl, Lumen and Guy, all residents of Lincoln County. Mr. Butterfield was 73 years old.
