Fred H. Meyer, Jr. was the only son (with three sisters) of Fred H. Meyer and Mabel Birdie Lacey Meyer. He was born June 5, 1930 in San Antonio , Texas .

After graduating from Harlandale High School in San Antonio , he attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene , Texas as a ministerial student. He had a wonderful baritone voice and sang in the college choir. Before he finished his fourth year at Hardin Simmons, Fred joined the US Air Force in February 1951. He served at Lackland AFB, San Antonio in Administrative Career Field; Bitburg, Germany AFB with Air Weather Service, traveling widely on a Inspector General's team; briefly at Biggs Army Base in El Paso, Texas as interim 1st Sgt in the Motor Pool; went through Electronics School at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Mississippi; worked in a radar practice bombing detachment near Houston, Texas and near Astoria, Oregon; then at his last assignment prior to leaving the military, he worked Quality Control on the development of the Titan 11 missiles used for the first space shots. He left the military in February 1965.

Prior to leaving the military, he had taken the postal examination. While waiting for assignment to the US Postal System, he worked briefly for Sterling Electronics in San Antonio . He worked for the US Postal System until February 1985, serving as Manager of Fleet Operations at the time that he retired and moved to his retirement home in Rochelle , Texas . He was substitute teacher at Rochelle ISD, then was appointed as the McCulloch County Tax Assessor/Collector where he was serving at the time of his death from a massive heart attack on February 11, 1990.

Fred was married to Naomi Elizabeth Knox, known as Betty, on November 3, 1951 and had two sons, Michael Wayne and Robert Lloyd.
