MOFFETT WINSTON-SALEM - Robert B. Moffett went to join his Maker on December 15, 2010 at Hospice Home in W-Salem, NC. His wife, Dr. Eleanor Moffett predeceased him. He displayed great optimism and love for everyone during his lifetime and always had a smile for everyone he met. He was born in Kiangyin, China, the son of Presbyterian missionaries, Lacy Irvin Moffett and Kate Rod Moffett on April 5, 1910. He was home schooled until the sixth grade and then attended Shanghai American School in Shanghai, China. He moved back to the U.S. his senior year of high school and graduated from Hume Fog High School in Nashville, TN. He then attended and graduated from Davidson College in Davidson, NC. He was one of eight children. His brothers and sisters that predeceased him were: Newton Moffett, Rod Moffett, Alex Moffett, Irvine Moffett, Florence Snell, and Cai Conway. He was a Major in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He continued his military career in the U.S. Army reserves until his retirement. He and his wife, Eleanor, moved to Burlington, N.C. in 1945 where they had a daughter, Alice Rod Moffett, who passed away in May 2009. While in Burlington, he was principal of Glen Hope Elementary School. When that school was closed, he became principal of Jessie Wharton Elementary School in Greensboro. He was both a Deacon and Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Burlington. He dedicated his life to the teaching of children, and later, in retirement, to his gardening. He grew many vegetables for his family, and the excess he gave away to the community. In later years, he lived with his daughter in Winston Salem, N.C. and thrived on growing flowers in his daughter's yard. He decided to donate his body to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. for research purposes. His Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 1416 Bolton St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103 on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Moffett asked that Memorial Donations be made to his church, Trinity Presbyterian Church at 1416 Bolton St., Winston-Salem, NC. 27103.
