Charles Braden, Jr., (Chuck or Junior) 71, of Lanham-Seabrook, MD passed away December 18, 1999 at Prince George’s Hospital Center, Cheverly, MD surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born November 20, 1928 in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee to Charlie Lee Braden and Lena Viola (Fowler) Braden Stinnett. His parents divorced and his mother remarried a widower, Robert Franklin Stinnett in 1936 who had 4 children. The family moved to Gastonia, NC around 1939.
He quit school at 15 in 1943 and worked at the Rex Cotton Mill as a spinning Doffer, then enlisted in the Armed Forces May 12, 1948. He loved being stationed in France for 2 1/2 yrs. He got to tour France and the surrounding countries. Returning to the states in 1951 he was stationed at Ft. McNair, Washington, DC, where he met his wife Mernie Elizabeth (McDowell) Braden who worked at the C&P Telephone Co. They were married January 18, 1952.
After his discharge May 1, 1952 they moved to Gastonia, NC, then in 1953 to Danville, VA, then in 1955 returned to Washington, DC to work for Ballauf, D Manufacturing Co., Inc. on H Street where he retired after 30+ yrs of service. In 1958 they purchased their home in Lanham-Seabrook.
Chuck was an avid bowler, loved all sports, traveling and spending time with his family. He was a loving devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, his half sisters Vicky Lynn Stinnett Toney, Edith Braden Headrick, stepbrothers Raymond Stinnett, William Stinnett, stepsister Clara Stinnett Marlow, brothers-in-law Glen Wilt, Charles Louis Lancaster, and Ronald Mayhew. Survivors are his wife, three daughters Mernie Kathleen Bone (Barry) of Mt. Airy, MD, Nancy Louise Bartlett (Keith) of Prince Frederick, MD, Lena Marie Benoit (Raymond) of Ridgely, MD, one son Charles Edward Braden (Marie) of Hughesville, MD, 10 grandchildren, 2 stepgrandchildren, stepsister Helen Stinnett Lucas (James)of Gastonia, NC, half brother James R Braden, Corryton, TN, half sisters Juanita Braden, Gayle Ferrell (Bo) of Powell, TN, Shirley Norris (Howard) of Knoxville, TN, numerous nieces and nephews.
After he died, Mernie sold their home of 48 years in 2006 and moved to a Senior Apartment Housing in North Beach, MD until she passed September 10, 2012.

Junior's niece Elizabeth Olmstead:
Momma told me that Grandma Lena always kept their step brother really clean and dressed up. One day her and Aunt Helen got together and showed him how to get dirty.
Uncle Junior was always a nice kind man. I remember him and Mernie brought the children down from Washington every summer. When Aunt Vicky died they took Grandma back with them and kept her until his death.
