Ian T. Zook, 24, died Oct. 12, 2004 while serving his country in Iraq during a mortar attack.

Cpl. Zook was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif.

His first duty station was in Kings Bay, Ga., before traveling to Twentynine Palms, Calif., and deploying to Iraq in August.

Ian was born in Peoria, Ill., and lived in Port St. Lucie for 18 years, coming from Illinois.

He earned straight A's and was a graduate and valedictorian of the class of 1999 at Faith Baptist School, Fort Pierce, graduate of the Word of Life Bible Institute, Hudson, attended Indian River College where he studied criminal justice, went on two mission trips, and in May 2001 he joined the Marine Corp.

His awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Thomas E. Zook.
