THE LIFE STORY OF MRS. GEORGE L. PETERSEN, 85

Emily Petersen, the daughter of Eliza and Chris Hess, was born on a farm in Jackson Township, Shelby County, Iowa on August 29, 1881. She departed this life at the home of her son, Ernest, in Harlan, Iowa on September 13, 1966, just fifteen days after her 85th birthday.

She grew to womanhood near Jacksonville and was baptized in the Lutheran faith there.

On August 22, 1900 she married George L. Petersen and to this union five children were born.

Mr. and Mrs. Petersen farmed in Jackson Township until February of 1930. They then moved to Harlan and she has made this her home since that time.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Leonard V. Hess; four brothers, Leonard, Alvin, Henry and Chris Hess; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Petersen and Eliza Hess and by two great grandsons.

Surviving are two daughters, Vernie, Mrs. Harry Nielsen of Shelby, Iowa and Rose, Mrs. Everett Eggerss of Avoca, Iowa; two sons, Ernest R. Hess of Harlan, Iowa and Roy C. Hess of San Leandro, California; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Herman and Ernest Hess of Harlan, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Ann Petersen of Elk Horn, Iowa, Mrs. May Johnson and Mrs. William (June) Hoskins, both of Harlan, Iowa.

Funeral services were held September 15, 1966 at the Pauley Home for Funerals in Harlan, with Rev. Oscar E. Johnson officiating.

Pallbearers were Malvin Hess, Verdell Hess, Bernard Hess, Clinton Petersen, Gaylord Johnson and Leon V. Petersen.

Burial was in the Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa.
