William `Fishbait' Miller, 80, the legendary doorkeeper of the U.S. House of Representatives, died at his home in Greensboro, NC. He was a native of Pascagoula, MS.

A protege of William Colmer (D-Miss.) Fishbait Miller served as doorkeeper from 1949 to 1953, and again from 1955 until 1974. From 1947 to 1949, and again from 1953 to 1955, he was House minority housekeeper.

He was most visible to the public when the president entered the House to address joint sessions of Congress. His was the voice that for many years announced "Mr. Speaker, the President of the United States."
