1865 - James A. Sweeney - 1947

James Ashton Sweeney, the son of Michael and Bridge Leahy Sweeney, was born on August 25, 1865 at Darlington, Wisconsin. He passed away at his home in Sutherland, Iowa, on June 26, 1947 at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 1 day.

His childhood was spent at his birthplace in Darlington, where he started his grade school education. He moved with his parents to Peterson, Iowa, at the age of seven. After only 6 months of residence there, they came to Sutherland. This community has been his home since that time. He was married on January 4, 1894 at Hartley, Iowa, to Alice Myra Triplett. This marriage was solemnized at Rock Valley, Iowa. To them were born 2 children. His son, Emmet, preceded him in death in the year 1931.

The deceased was a faithful member of the Catholic faith.

Mr. Sweeney served as a member of the Town Council for many years, has been a director of the Security State Bank since its organization, and was also a director of the Sutherland Farmer Cooperative Elevator Company for many years.
