Eleanor Marie Sweeney was born near Sutherland, Iowa on 15 October 1898 to James and Alice Triplett Sweeney.
After graduation from Sutherland High School in 1916 and Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, in 1920, she taught high school mathematics in Roland, Sheldon, Sutherland, and Rock Rapids. On 24 June 1925 she married Vernon Flinders in Sutherland. To this union were born three children. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Guild, and a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She passed away at the age of 86 years and seven days. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; an infant son; one brother, Emmet Sweeney; and one grandson, Patrick Flinders.
Left to cherish her memory are a son, James, and his wife, Shirley (Hoy) of Sutherland; a daughter, Mrs. David (Marilynn) Kanellis of Iowa City; nine grandchildren: Andrea, Samuel, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Michael, Maureen, Michael & Natalie; and six great-grandchildren: Nicki, Robert, Patrick, Christopher, Michael & Susan.
