JAMES WILLIS
Funeral services for James Perdue Willis, 77, of Pine Bluff, who died January 1, 1998, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Charles Settle and Jay Culpepper officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.
He was born on February 14, 1920, at Batesville, a son of the late James Harry and Enoch Perdue Willis.
He was a 1939 graduate of Little Rock High School. He attended Little Rock Junior College (now the University of Arkansas at Little Rock) until 1942 and was an architecture graduate of the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana, graduating in January 1949.
He volunteered for the Army Air Corps in 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater in the Army Air Corps Supreme Headquarters in Australia and Fifth Air Force Fighter Command at New Guinea.
He was a graduate of Officer Candidate School in Australia, graduating in January 1944. He returned to New Guinea until May 1945 and was separated from service as a first lieutenant in September 1945.
He returned to Little Rock after he graduated in Illinois. He began his career and practiced architecture with Ginochio-Cromwell and with Wittenberg, Deloney and Davidson there. He entered a partnership with Don Reed at Pine Bluff in 1954, forming Reed-Willis Architects. He practiced there until his death. He designed several landmarks in Arkansas, Jefferson County and Pine
Bluff.
He won several awards for inovative design and was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the National American Institute of Architects. He served on the Arkansas State Historical Preservation Commission for three
governors and helped establish the School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church at Pine Bluff.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry H.
, the former Martha Beard, whom he married on July 9, 1945, at Little Rock; a son, Michael Beard Willis of Houston; two
daughters, Cynthia McGrew of Fort Smith and Suzanne Sutterfield of Clarksville; a sister, Amy Elizabeth Wilder of Benton; and five grandchildren.
