Multimillionaire hotel and theater owner who got his start in Gloversville in 1917 when he negotiated a lease for the Hippodrome Theater. He once said that a film salesman he met on a train told him that Gloversville could use a theater operator. In 1920, he also purchased the Glove Theater in Gloversville.

Died of a brain tumor.

Began peddling with his Grandfather at the age of 4 in Lithuania and emigrated to the U. S. at age 12 with his Mother and younger brother.

Attended school in Jamestown and in 1914 made an unsuccessful attempt to operate a movie theater in Syracuse. He then briefly sold candy on trains and was a dress salesman before he took over the Hippodrome in Gloversville.

He also went back to selling candy & founded the chain of Mrs. Wiggins Candy Stores.

Wife: Hildegarde Feldman Schine, daughter of Morris & Martha Feldman, who lived in Johnstown in Censuses of 1910 & 1920. Morris was a Russian immigrant and Martha was from NY. Hildegarde and J. Myer married Aug. 30, 1925, in the Italian Room at the Hotel Utica in Utica, NY.

Sons: Gerard David and Charles Richard Schine (Gerard David Schine was prominent in the 1950s with Roy Cohn working for Joseph McCarthy's Senate Security Sub-Committee. He played a large role in the Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954.)

Daughters: Mrs. Doris J. Maxwell of Wellesley, Mass. & Mrs. Lester (Renee) Crown of Chicago, Ill.

Brother: Louis W. Schine (died in Gloversville in 1956; FindAGrave # 96865709)

NOTE: His Social Security Death Record shows his birth as Feb. 29 while his World War I Draft Registration shows it as Feb. 28. Also, his World War I Draft Registration shows that he was born in Germany but his Obituary and other records list that he was born in Russia; more specifically in his Gloversville Obituary - Metau, Latvia.

Census records show that he emigrated to the U. S. in 1900.

The Schine Student Center at Syracuse University is named for J. Myer and his wife, Hildegarde.
