James L Lewis, son of Irish Immigrants Matthew (1810-1867)and Rosanna Lewis (1813-?), his father was killed 14 Nov 1867 by a train as he was walking along the tracks in Millport, Chemung, NY. I do not know what become of the mother after that.
The family appears on the 1850 census with Matthe, Rosanna, Richard b. 1839 PA, Dennis b. James b. 1847 NY and Catharine. b. 1849 NY. By 1860 only Dennis and James remain in the household.
James married two of the daughters of Peter & Bridget McCawley, Julia who died in the early months of 1879 and upon her death he married in Mar 1879 to Anna, with a combined total of seven children; two are not interred here, Richard (1873-1929) in Buffalo and Mary Lewis Hoffman (1881-1974) in Albany.
James enlisted in Company G, New York 50th Engineer Regiment on 17 Mar 1865 and was mustered out on 13 Jun 1865 at Fort Barry, VA.
