In this city, January 19, Mariana, beloved wife of the late Jacob Berel and loving and devoted mother of Samuel Berel, Mrs. Cecelia Isaacs, Henry Berel and Mrs. Frederickey Dobner, a native of Breslau, Germany, aged 60 years. Married 47 years. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral this day (Tuesday), at 2 o'clock, sharp, from the residence of her son, S Berel, 1004 Natoma Street, near Eleventh.

Mariana Levin Berel arrived in the harbor of New York City, NY on Jan. 22, 1848 aboard the sailing vessel, Diana (a barque). Cecilia, their daughter, who was one yr. of age was with her mother. The passenger list did not have Jacob's name. The passenger list gives her birthplace and last place of settlement as Breslau, Prussia, Germany. Mariana was a cabin passenger. The cabin passenger's did not have to go to Ellis Island so there are no records other than the ship passenger list. She gave birth to three more children in New York. 1. Samuel Berel 2. Fredricka Catherine Berel 3. Henry Berel As to this date no records in New York City can be found on the birth of these children. The census records give New York as their place of birth. In California another daughter, Josephine, was born. Josephine died at 15 years of age on Feb. 24, 1874. Mariana (Mary) Levin Berel died on January 19, 1890 and is buried at the Eternal Home Cemetery in Colma, California. Her obit is listed in the Cronicle and also in the Examiner papers. Her funeral was held at the home of her son, Samuel Berel, who lived at 1004 Natoma, San Francisco, California. Her headstone is written in Hebrew and English.

Ellis Island did not open until 1892. Before that, the immigrant inspection was done at Castle Garden, which opened in 1855. In 1848 there was no inspection station at all. Typically, immigrants before 1855 were free to go when their ship arrived. The federal government didn't get into restricting immigration until 1890, when they took over Castle Garden, which had previously been run by the state of New York.
