-----------------------------------
BIOGRAPHYY: U.S. War Department Notes

Civil War--George Byers enlisted at age 19 on August 15, 1861 in the 18th Ohio Infantry, Company F and served three yeaars until he mustered out at Camp Charles, Ohio on November 9, 1864.

George Byers was engaged in building and making roads for the purpose of getting supplies into camp. It was cold and rainy, and during a forced three day hard march in the sun from Manchester to Nashville TN, around October 1, 1862, he contracted heart disease entirely disabling him so that he had to be hauled part of the way, and he continued to suffer with heart disease and was disabled untl hs death. He was 59 years old.

Members of his company: Wiliam Wade and Benjamin Byers. General: O.M. Mitchell
----------------------------------
The 1870 US Census in Trimble, Athens, Ohio George and his wife, Lucinda, had one child, Albert. George was listed as an invalid.

In the 1880 US Census in Ward, Hocking, Ohio George and Lucinda now had three children; Albert, Sarah L and Elwood Byers. The census says that George was a farmer.

By the 1900 US Census in Trimble, Athens, Ohio, George and Lucinda have wo more children; Minnie and Sullivan Byers. The census also gives coal miner as his occupaton.

*** The only record that I have found that gives George's middle name is his son's death record, which says his name was George Washington Byers. The son's obituary says the same. All the military records and other records, including his tombstone say simply George W. Byers. Not being certain of what the W stands for, I am making his memorial with just his initial.
