"Mr. Benton served several years as alderman of his ward and took much interest in all progressive activities of the city. From the obituary in the Willow Springs Republican, Nov. 17, 1927, by Fenton Chapin, editor, William Benton had one of the most beautiful and largely attended funerals ever held in the city, which was testimonial to the regard in which he was held." From the book, Willow Springs and Surrounding Communities 1869-1969 Centennial, by Ella Lilly Horak.
