Charles Dennis DeLong was born June 5, 1839 at Starksboro, Addison Co., VT. He married Ruth Melissa or Melissa Ruth Blanchard, b. Nov. 24, 1842, about 1860.

On Sept. 8, 1862 Charles began service in the Civil War as a Pvt. in Co. G. 14th VT Regiment. He left the regiment July 30, 1863. He was also a farmer.

In 1886 Charles moved to Loyalton, Edmunds Co, SD as part of the Vermont Colony that was established there. Charles and Melissa sold their VT land on July 19, 1886 to Israel Lafayette. It was originally owned by Charles' parents Joseph and Roxy Maynard DeLong and then by his brother, Richard. On December 21, 1889 Charles obtained a land patent for 160 acres in Edmunds Co. Charles d. Oct. 22, 1892; Melissa d. Aug. 18, 1887 and are buried at the Loyalton Cemetery, Edmunds Co. SD. They were the parents of eleven children.
