Oklahoma Governor. As a lawyer from Perry, Oklahoma he was appointed a member of the State Constitutional Convention of 1906. He also was elected a member of the first State Legislature, became the first State Senate Pro Tempore and was elected Governor in 1927. At first popular with the legislature, Johnston became entangled in scandal involving his secretary and his support of Democrat Al Smith in 1928 for the Presidency. He was impeached and removed from office March 20, 1929. He later returned to the State Senate and practiced law in Perry until his death.
