Sinbad received fame as a mascot aboard the USCGC Campbell, in World War II. He 'enlisted' in the Coast Guard by putting his paw print on the enlistment papers. He served from 1937-1948, then was retired to the Barnegat Light Station, until his death in December of 1951. He was buried beneath a granite monument at the base of the station's flagpole.

During the War, he had the rank of Chief Petty Officer, although he is said to have lost it several times due to 'misconduct'. He was with his ship during convoy escort duties and once, during an attack on the U-606, severe damage was done to the Campbell, which was towed into Canada. A picked crew was left on board, including 'Sinbad'. He was known as a good luck dog to the ship and it was felt that, as long as he was on the ship, it would not sink.
