William Robert Lyle was the first son of blacksmith Jefferson Young Lyle and Sarah Jane West. He was born in Pickens County, Alabama shortly before his father left to fight with the 24th Alabama Infantry. Upon his return from the Civil War in 1865 the Lyle family moved to Columbus, Lowndes County Mississippi and opened a blacksmith shop. Robert Lyle and his brothers Henry Claudius Lyle and Albert Sidney Lyle all trained as blacksmiths with their father. Robert Lyle married Charlotte Louise Pescot Riley in Columbus December 25 1884. They had daughter Sarah Louise Lyle there 1887. In 1890 the Lyle boys, including Robert Lyle's family, went to Birmingham, Alabama to work in the "Lyle and Sons Blacksmith and Carriage Shop". Son Vivian Lyle (1890-1948) and daughter Florence Estella Lyle (1895-1964) were born there. The Robert Lyle family then left after 1895 to Los Angeles, California. (His father and brother Albert moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee; brother Henry opened a carriage shop in Huntsville, Alabama).
