Painter. Born Antonello Di Giovanni D'Antonio in Messina (Sicily). He probably introduced oil painting and Flemish pictorial techniques into mid-15th-century Venetian art. After studying in Naples and Sicily he is said to have visited Flanders, and then to have settled in Venice and introduced the practice of painting in oils instead of in tempera. Among his most notable works are: ‘Portrait of a Young Man’ (1474, Dahlem Museum, Berlin), ‘Ecce Homo’ (1474, Metropolitan Museum, New York City), and ‘Il Condottiere’ (Portrait of a Man, 1475, Louvre, Paris). He returned to Messina in 1476 and there completed his ‘Annunciation’ (1476, Galleria Nazionale, Palermo), his last painting before his death. He dictated his will on February 14, 1479, and died sometime between the 14th and 25th of February.
