Charles Draper enlisted as a Quartermaster Sergeant in the 5th Michigan Infantry on August 28,1861.On October 28,1861,he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Co.I,3rd Michigan Infantry.After being wounded during the Battle of Antietam while serving as Aide-de-Camp on General Israel Richardson's staff,he resigned his commission on March 19,1863.
