HIGH POINT Mr. Harry Martin Canavan, 88, of 1600 Maryfield Court, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at High Point Regional Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church by Father Anthony J. Gilborges, O.S.F.S. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery.

He was born in Montreal, Canada, Feb. 10, 1915, a son of James Canavan and Mary Frances Chambers Canavan. He served in the Signal Corps, a division of the Air Corps during World War II.

Mr. Canavan was employed with AT&T until his retirement in March 1977 after 37 years of service. In his early years of retirement, his love of reading led to teaching adults to read. He also worked as a volunteer for the Library of Congress, repairing broken machines used by the blind. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. On July 19, 1948, he married Margaret Hargett, who survives of the home.

Also surviving is a brother, Edward John Canavan, of Bradenton, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Canavan, of Silver Springs, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
