From the Rutland Daily Herald, Oct. 19, 1910:
Word has been received by E.R. Monahan of West Rutland of the death of his cousin, John J. Monahan of Burlington. Mr. Monahan was 69 years of age and death was due to a complication of diseases. The body will be brought to West Rutland on Thursday and the burial will be in the family lot in Main street cemetery. Mr. Monahan served through the war being a member of the Berdan sharpshooters. After the close of the war he went to Burlington where he entered into a partnership in the grocery business with Capt. Longeran, and later studying law with the late David E. Nicholson of Wallingford and after being admitted to the bar opened an office at Essex where he remained a number of years. Later he served as judge of probate while residing in Underhill. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. John Carroll, Mrs. Thomas Murphy and Mrs. Thomas A. Monahan [as written] and one brother, Thomas A. Monahan all of Burlington.
